A gas station explosion in Ghana’s capital, Accra, late on Saturday, followed by a secondary blast has resulted to the death of an unknown number of people.
The initial explosion took place at about 7:30pm local time at a gas station owned by Ghana Oil Company Ltd, and then spread to a Total petrol station across the street, Reuters reports citing a witness.
The filling station is close to a transport terminal and some hostels for the University of Ghana in Accra, this according to the Associated Press.
Ghana’s deputy information Minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said the fire has been controlled and fire-fighters are now controlling the second explosion, the report said.
Nkrumah further stated that it was early to give the number of injured or dead, but said that there are casualties from the tragedy.
Ambulances were deployed at the scene and the injured were sent to hospital.
More than 200 police personnel were also deployed to help to cordon off the area of the explosion, making it difficult to access, the report said.
In 2015, about 100 people were killed in a petrol station explosion in Accra, as they sought shelter nearby from massive flooding.
