Gambia’s new national carrier, Fly Mid Africa, has unveiled flights to Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown on Monday, ending a three-year break in direct link between the two countries, reports Business Daily.
The new carrier is seeking to connect the West and Central Africa region. The airline’s management says it will initially serve six West African destinations, namely Banjul, Freetown, Dakar in Senegal, Accra in Ghana, Lagos in Nigeria, and Monrovia in Liberia facilitating trade and tourism among the countries.
Fly Mid Africa appointed aviation and travels conglomerate, Peacock Aviation Services, as its General Sales Agent in Nigeria according to Daily Trust. The agent will facilitate ticket sales as the airline targets to address the connectivity challenges faced by business and leisure travelers according to the Daily Trust.
Both governments and the owners of the new airline hope the venture will drastically bring airfares down.
Fly Mid Africa comes as a major relief, particularly for Sierra Leoneans who have had to endure long land travel after the last direct flight between Banjul and Freetown was on August 15, 2014 at the height of the Ebola epidemic.
The airline will also be providing safe, reliable and efficient air transport services to spur economic development and foster regional integration through the promotion of trade and regional tourism according to the Managing Director, Fly Mid Africa, Mr. Bakary Nyassi.
Fly Mid Africa is Gambia’s latest attempt at flight operation, after several past failures, including the Gambian Bird, which ceased operation in 2014, less than three years after inauguration.
