Gabon bans night travel after grisly accident
Gabon has banned travelling at night on the country’s main national road, following a grisly accident that occurred on Saturday night killing 18 people.
The National 1 highway, where Saturday’s accident happened, links the capital Libreville with the interior of the country and is often heavily congested.
The accident involved a minibus and a lorry, but the cause of the accident has not yet been established.
Kenya imposed a similar ban in 2014 on public transport vehicles in an attempt to curb the high number of accidents on the country’s roads.
The ban was however overturned after a successful challenge in the courts on grounds that it was unconstitutional to restrict people’s movements.
