Authorities in Gabon have arrested around 1,000 people following the violence that has rocked the nation after President Ali Bongo was declared winner of the presidential vote.

The country’s opposition rejected the results saying they were fraudulently conducted.

Gabon’s national assembly building in the capital city of Libreville was set ablaze late on Aug 31, as protestors demonstrated against President Ali Bongo victory.

Jean Ping, Bongo’s main challenger in the election has reportedly gone into hiding with his family saying he fears for his life.
