2018 finalist Kevin Anderson of South Africa suffered a shock elimination in the third round at Wimbledon at the hands of Argentina’s Guido Pella in straight sets.
The 26th seed beat Anderson 4-6, 3-6, 6-7 in 2 hours 36 minutes on Centre Court to claim one of the biggest wins of his career.
The first set went with serve until the ninth game when Pella eventually broke the 4th seed who had saved three set points.
In the second set, Pella broke Anderson in the second game to take a 0-2 lead but Anderson broke back three games later to rally to 2-3 down. The game went with serve until Anderson lost his in the eighth game to allow Pella to take a 3-5 lead. Pella held serve to take the set 6-3.
The third set was a much tighter affair with both players holding serve forcing it into a tiebreak. Anderson lost serve on the first point and the tiebreak went with serve until the Argentine converted his first match point to take the third set 6-7 (4-7).
Pella, who has reached the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, will face Canada’s Milos Raonic on Monday.
