Four Nigerian troops killed by suspected pirates in Rivers state
Four Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCD) troops were killed by suspected armed pirates in Rivers State, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, while confirming the deaths that occurred in Alakiri in Degema Local Government Area, promised thorough investigations aimed at nabbing the killers .
“The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has assured that the blood of the gallant men will not be a waste,” he said.
“I’ll not reveal to the public our operational strategies to bring the perpetrators to book, but we are in collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure that justice is served,” he added.
Pirates continue to operate in Nigeria’s waters despite years-long efforts by the West African country’s security agencies to curb the vice.
Pirates often abduct people, sometimes targeting foreigners, then demand hefty ransoms for their release.
In October, Nigerian and French navies conducted joint navy drills aimed at combating piracy and trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea.
