Four dead in DR Congo anti-government protests
At least four people, including two police officers, were killed on Monday in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, as protesters took to the streets to demand that President Joseph Kabila steps down at the end of his term on 20 December.
The country’s opposition fears that Kabila plans to delay the presidential vote scheduled for November in order to stay in power.
President Kabila is serving his second and last term as president, and is barred by the constitution from running for a third term.
The DR Congo government and election officials say the poll may have to be delayed, citing challenges in organizing them in the vast Central African state.
Protesters set up barricades on major roads in the capital, and burned tyres.
The protests turned violent when police confronted them during their march.
