Former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will now head of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

Ban officially started his two-year term in office on Tuesday, taking over from Ethiopia’s Dr. Gemedo Dalle, who had served in acting capacity since July 2017.

Ban’s appointment was unanimously endorsed by Members of the GGGI Assembly where they met in Korean capital, Seoul.

In a statement, Dr. Frank Rijsberman, Director-General of GGGI expressed optimism about Ban’s appointment, saying it will deliver ‘even greater impacts’ on achieving SDGs and climate change targets,  Rwanda’s online website, the New Times reports.

“Under Mr. Ban’s leadership, governments of the world agreed on concrete goals and targets necessary for achieving a more sustainable and inclusive future. The Climate Change targets agreed under the Paris Agreement and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are rightly recognised among the world’s greatest diplomatic successes,” he said.

“His vision and leadership will help GGGI deliver even greater impact in our mission supporting member governments to achieve the ambitions set out under the SDGs and the Paris Agreement.”

GGGI is an international body that focuses on tackling global challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, energy shortage, food security and global health, by supporting its member governments to achieve the commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement and their Sustainable Developments Goal (SDG’s) targets.
