Former soccer star George Weah takes early lead in Liberia’s preliminary results

Liberia’s Preliminary results indicate that former soccer star, George Weah is leading.
According to the country’s electoral commission chair, Jerome G. Korkoya, Weah is leading in 11 out of 15 voting regions in the results announced on Thursday.
Weah’s close opponent and Vice President, Joseph Boakai led in just one county- although he was the second candidate in most of the regions.
Two top candidates from the field of 20 candidates will head for a run-off in November – in the event that none garners an outright win.
Liberia’s polls are seen by many, as a transition from its bloody past.
Voters are choosing a successor to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who led Liberia as it recovered from civil war and the Ebola outbreak that killed nearly 5,000 people and sparked fear around the world.
