Former Al Ahli, Trabzonspor & Austin Bold striker Promise Isaac died on Wednesday at the age of 31, his club, American side Austin Bold FC, said.

The club, however, did not state the cause of death.

Isaac was captain of the Nigerian team that won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.

He also represented the Super Eagles in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship.

“The greatest loss a team can suffer is not on the scoreboard, it’s the death of a fellow teammate. It’s with shock and grief that we acknowledge the sudden death of Promise Isaac,” a statement from Austin Bold FC Chairman Bobby Epstein said.

“On behalf of the BOLD organisation; we wish his wife, children and family strength and peace as they struggle to cope with his death.”

Promise featured in the Turkish Süper Lig, the TFF First League, and the Saudi Professional League.

Austin Bold FC’s USL Championship match against Real Monarchs, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to Wednesday next week following the death of Isaac.

The Nigeria Football Federation and one of his former teammates, Anton Ferdinand, were among members of the football fraternity to send their condolences following Isaac’s death.
