
Former Maldives vice president deported from India
India has deported former Maldivian vice president Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor who is reported to have tried entering the country illegally.
Ghafoor attempted to enter India without permission alongside nine other countrymen according to sources in the Ministry of External Affairs.
“Yes, he has been deported back today,” a source confirmed on Saturday.
Ghafoor and the nine men accompanying him were handed over to Maldivian security personnel at the International Boundary Line.
The group were captured on Thursday as they tried to enter India without travel documentation.
The former vice president is said to have escaped his country after facing serious criminal charges.
He arrived at the Tuticorin Old Port in Tamil Nadu on a tugboat.
His arrest was confirmed on Thursday by External Affairs Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar.
