Former Kenyan presidential candidate Kenneth Matiba has died in hospital aged 85 years, after a long illness.
Matiba passed on while receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness in the capital Nairobi.
He is best remembered for running for the presidency in the East African country’s 1992 elections, where he finished second after the then president Daniel Arap Moi.
In the next election in 1997, Matiba boycotted, citing a lack of transparency.
Matiba is reported to have suffered a stroke while in prison in 1990, a condition that kept him in and out of hospital for years.
He also served as chairman of the Kenya Football Federation from 1974 to 1978 and Minister of Transport and Communications under the KANU administration.
