Former Arsenal and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry has been named as the assistant manager of Belgium.

Henry will now assist Roberto Martinez in coaching the Belgium football team, after the Spaniard replaced Marc Wilmots at the start of August.

Martinez has welcomed the appointment of the French saying he is an important figure to the sport.

“Thierry is an important figure,” said the former Everton boss. “He will bring something different. He agreed right away to join us.”

Henry himself has expressed his excitement to take up his new role in the Belgian squad.

“Honoured to be assistant coach, very excited, can’t wait,” the 39-year-old said

Henry will work alongside Graeme Jones, who served with Martinez at Swansea, Wigan and Everton.
