Many former Angolan apartheid troops remain stranded in South Africa without healthcare, jobs or basic services.

They are also scared of returning home as people there perceive them as traitors.

The soldiers were formerly recruited by South Africa’s apartheid government to fight against their homeland.

The 32 battalion was relocated to Pomfret with the promise that its members would be integrated into the regular South African army, but this never materialized.

Many of the men waived their right to be incorporated into the reformed army in return 32,000 US dollars, while others opted to remain.

There are around 3, 000 Angolan-born men living in the town of Pomfret.
