General Abdelghani Hamel, a former Algerian police chief, has been summoned for questioning about allegations of corruption, according to Algeria’s state media.

State media further reported that Hamel is due to appear in court Monday with one of his sons.

Hamel and his son are expected to be questioned as part of a judicial inquiry into alleged illegal activity, bribery, embezzlement of funds and abuse of power.

Hamel was once considered a pillar of the administration of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika before he was dismissed in June 2018.

Bouteflika resigned on April 2 after nearly 20 years in office after months of protests against his rule.

Since Bouteflika’s exit, investigators have intensified actions on alleged corruption and narrowed in on the activities of prominent politicians and businessmen.

About a week ago, state media reported that five of Algeria’s richest businessmen, some seen as close to Bouteflika, were detained by policeas part of investigations into allegations of corruption.
