Nigeria’s emergency management agency says floods in the northern state of Kano have claimed 54 lives in the last four months, as well as destroying over 30,000 homes.
81 injuries were also sustained as a result of windstorms, heavy rains and associated fire outbreaks in region during the same period, the agency said.
Executive Secretary Saleh Jili told reporters on Friday that aid was being distributed to the impacted parties, explaining that, along with food aid, building materials like cement and roofing sheets and household goods like mattresses and blankets were being passed out to help residents rebuild after the damage to their dwellings.
“We were in the affected areas to sympathise with the victims and distributed relief materials to alleviate their sufferings,” Saleh said, adding that displaced persons were mainly sheltering with relatives for the time being.
Saleh called on aid agencies and private business-people to donate to the relief efforts, while warning that more flooding could still be on the horizon
