First Hijab collection by Muslim designer showcased at the New York Fashion Week

Annieda Hasibuan, an Indonesian Muslim designer has made history on the runaway at New York Fashion Week as the first designer to ever showcase her pieces with hijab-wearing models.

Hasibuan turned heads with her Spring/Summer ’17 collection labelled as D’Jakarta which featured modest fashion, with models wearing flowing trousers and silk skirts. Each model was aforned with a gold, pink or grey silk hijab.

This was her first how in the US. She has held previous shows in London and Paris.

Her designs, which she says were inspired by her home city of Jakarta, consisted of 48 varying looks, from every-day wear to evening dresses and concluded with Ms Hasibuan taking to the runway, to be received by a standing ovation.

Social media has been abuzz with people heaping praises calling the designs breath-taking.  Various news outlets and websites have showed support on the designer’s work.

The New York Fashion Week which ran from September 7th to September 15th attracted close to 125,000 people with a further 2 million estimated to have tuned in online via livestreams.
