Fire broke out in Rwanda’s Nyarugenge Prison in Kigali on Sunday, razing down one room and causing injuries, authorities said.

No life was lost in the incident.

Hillary Sengabo, Senior Inspector of Prisons (SIP) at Rwanda Correctional Services said the burnt room accommodated 68 inmates.

He said that rescue efforts by the police and army helped put out the fire before it spread.

Mattresses and other personal effects were destroyed in the afternoon fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Those who sustained injuries received treatment.

According to the authorities, the Nyarugenge prison has 3,127 inmates.
