#FIFA presidential election will go ahead as planned on Friday despite corruption arrests.
The candidates vying for the top job are Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan against current president Sepp Blatter.
Police in Switzerland early Wednesday arrested several officials including vice president Geffrey Webb from the football world governing body FIFA over corruption charges.
The operation was conducted at a hotel in Zurich.
Swiss authorities said on Wednesday they have opened criminal proceedings against individuals on suspicion of mismanagement and money laundering related to the award of rights to host the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups in Russia and Qatar respectively.
Switzerland’s justice ministry also said in a statement they had seized data and documents stored in IT systems at FIFA.
Officials say the seven Fifa executives were arrested on corruption charges springing from the US.
The charges are said to include money laundering, racketeering and wire fraud over the last 20 years.
Fifa members are gathering in Zurich for their annual meeting on Friday, where incumbent President Sepp Blatter is seeking a fifth term.
It further reports that the executives will be extradited back to the US to face the charges.
The Swiss city is the setting for this year’s annual meeting of (FIFA) football’s world governing body.
Multiple arrests were made on allegations of widespread corruption. The Associated Press quoting Swiss officials said six people had been arrested in Zurich under suspicion of getting or paying bribes.
Plain-clothed police officers took the room keys from the reception of Baur au Lac hotel, where the officials were staying, and headed upstairs to the guest room. It said the operation was carried out peacefully.
