FIFA banned Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee member Musa Bility for 10 years with effect from Wednesday after he was found guilty of violating its code of ethics.
Bility was additionally fined $500,000.
FIFA said Bility was found guilty of having embezzled FIFA funds. The funds in question are those allocated for a global information campaign to help combat the spread of Ebola and they also formed part of FIFA’s Financial Assistance Programme. Bility was also found guilty of having received benefits and found himself in situations of conflict of interest.
FIFA’s statement added that there were various payments made by the LFA to (and received from) entities owned by or connected to Bility and his family.
Bility has been under investigation since May 2018 following a forensic audit of the Liberian FA, according to FIFA.
The sanctions come a day after Bility filed a case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to nullify the agreement in which FIFA secretary-general Fatma Samoura will be sent on a secondment to overhaul the African governing body.
Bility is a former president of the LFA and has been critical of the recent steps taken by FIFA to take a more direct role in the running of African football.
