Murdered Burundian opposition party leader Zedi Feruzi

Opposition demonstrators in Burundi have threatened to return to the streets after an opposition leader was killed by unknown assailants over the weekend.

Zedi Feruzi was the leader of opposition party, Union for Peace and Development.

The opposition has also quit the peace talks with the government that were aimed at bringing about peace in Burundi before the elections.

Innocent Muhozi, general manager of the independent Renaissance Radio station, told VOA that the protesters are returning to the streets because they say nothing has changed.

“The organizers are calling for a bigger protest Monday because one of the opposition leaders was killed yesterday, and they also suspended the negotiations they started with the government. So, they say they are going to be protesting again because nothing has changed till now,” he said.

Burundi has witnessed weeks of protest against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a third term.

Demonstrators say they are holding a two-day truce, to allow residents to stock up on supplies and also so that they can bury the dead.

On Friday, at least two people were killed in a grenade attack in Bujumbura.

The unrest has also seen more than 100,000 people flee to neighboring countries likle Tanzania and Rwanda and a failed coup attempt against Mr Nkurunziza.

Protesters say they believe it’s their constitutional right to demonstrate  saying they have generally been peaceful.

Presidential spokesman Willy Nyamitwe said Nkurunziza has called for a “quick” investigation into the assassination.
