Failed harvests, prolonged dry spells worry Zimbabwe farmers

Drought is ravaging the entire southern African region and Zimbabwe faces yet another precarious year in 2016.

The country is already feeding millions in need of food this year and the numbers could grow next year as another poor agricultural season is imminent. This year, at least 1.5 million Zimbabweans are getting food aid. With prospects for the current season worse than the last, a crisis is imminent.

Usually at this time of the year cool south easterly winds meet and condense warm north westerly’s forming the inter-tropical convergence zone, which is responsible for the regions rainfall. The El Nino phenomenon is however changing that pattern.
