Ethiopian-born actress Ruth Negga nominated for Oscars for her role in “Loving”
Ruth Negga, Ethiopian-Irish actress has been nominated for the prestigious Oscars for her role in the 2016 movie, Loving.
She has been nominated in the “Actress in a Leading Role” and has been pitched against four other actresses for the award. Her competitors for the award include Isabelle Huppert (for her role in the fim ‘Elle’), Natalie Portman in ‘Jackie,’ Emma Stone in ‘La La Land,’ and Meryl Streep in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins.’
The film she played in borders on the true life story of a Virginia couple who had to live through the days when inter-racial marriages were outlawed. Her role in the movie, has won her other nominations aside the Academy Award for Best Actress. Other nominations include the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead, Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, and a BAFTA Rising Star Award.
“I am truly humbled by the news this morning, and I thank the Academy for this recognition, which I share with my co-collaborators Jeff Nichols and Joel Edgerton,” she told The Mary Sue in a statement.
Negga was raised by her Irish mother after her Ethiopian father died in a motor accident when she was young.
The Guardian reported that Negga lived in Ethiopia until she was four, and was then raised raised in Limerick and London.
She has also starred in Capital Letters (2004), Isolation and Breakfast on Pluto (2005), Warcraft (2016).
The film which was released in the United States last year was directed by Jeff Nichols who also wrote the screenplay. Ruth starred alongside Joel Edgerton as the main characters. Others in supporting roles included Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll and Michael Shannon.
The Academy Awards ceremony airs on February 26.
