Ethiopia begins campaign for a non permanent seat at the UN security council

Ethiopia’s desire to be a member of the UN security council is informed by the country’s contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security…and it believes it can do even more at the UN security council.
” If elected to the security council,Ethiopia will serve all members of the United Nations in discharging the charter mandated responsibilities bestowed up on it the in a true spirit of partnership and transparency. We believe we have the commitment, strength and the ability to offer real and valuable support to multi-lateralism and to pan -Africanism.” Said Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Beginning from the early 1950’s,Ethiopia has participated in several UN peacekeeping efforts including in Korea, Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. And currently with more than 8 thousand troops deployed,Ethiopia is the second largest troop contributor for the UN peacekeeping missions in the world. It is on this basis that it hopes to secure a seat on the security council as a non permanent member.
But what would Ethiopia’s election mean?
“It would help a great deal particularly in consolidating the bridge between Addis And New York. And in enhancing political coherence and coordinating between the AU on the one hand and the UN on the other” said Dr.Solomon Derso, Peace and security Analyst
” The AU peace and security council and the UN security council have convened annual a joint consultative meetings since 2007 is a major building block. The two organs can do more to further strengthen their relations including through harmonization of the calendars of the two councils. So who can do better this coordination and better work than Ethiopia who has been throughout faithful and committed to peace and security in the council.” said Ismail Chergui, Commissioner for peace and security, AUC
Since its inception 70 years ago Ethiopia has twice served on the security council at different times between 967 and 1990.
