Eskom Chairman Zola Tsotsi has stepped down after its board accused him of acting improperly by suspending the chief executive. The South African power utility said in a statement on Tuesday that the board and chairperson held a constructive discussion before he agreed to resign.
On behalf of the board, Doctor Ben Ngubane has thanked Tsotsi for what he’s called ‘the selfless decision’ and has wished him well in his future endeavours.
Eskom says Tsotsi has decided to resign so that the parastatal can focus on managing the power crisis and providing reliable energy.
His resignation follows repeated calls for him to be axed by unions and an attempted vote of no confidence last week.
Eskom’s board said that with the departure of Tsotsi, who had dismissed the accusations as minor issues, the company could focus on challenges facing it and regain the confidence of its stakeholders. Eskom provides almost all the power to Africa’s most advanced economy but is battling to keep the lights on amid a funding crunch.
