Juventus’ German midfielder Emre Can has hit out at racism in football following recent racist incidents in the game, labelling the perpetrators as “idiots”.

Racism in football has made headlines across Europe over the past couple of months, affecting players such as Raheem Sterling, Dany Rose and Can’s teammate Moise Kean.

“It doesn’t matter what you look like, where you come from, what religion you follow, or the colour of your skin; we’re all human beings,” Can said.

“Anyone who does not respect this is an idiot and has to stay away from the football stadium and our society.”

Various football clubs have had to ban their fans for racially abusing opposing players during matches, but some people believe this is not enough to stamp the vice out.

Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein called for greater action from FIFA to eliminate racism from the game.
