#EmergingFashion: Former First Lady rocks her natural hair, the internet cannot hold itself
One can argue that the same pace at which demand for human hair, weaves and hair extensions is growing is almost equal to the rate at which a number of African ladies are choosing to maintain their natural hair; and rock it proudly!
A natural mane can be a great source of strength and beauty and throughout the past five years the trend has become more and more popular. Social media profiles, blogs and vlogs, websites, and even magazines have gained popularity due to their specialization in natural hair.
People from all over the world are interested in knowing the best natural hair products to use, how to better care for their natural manes, and how to begin their natural hair journey. There is even a Natural Hair Movement which is encouraging women of African descent to keep their natural afro-textured hair.
Natural hair was also a trend in African women especially in the 70s and 80s.
So why are people back to rocking their natural hair?
An article on The Tiger’s Roar website tries to explain why when they interviewed Nzinga Washington, Vice President of the Savannah State University Chapter of CurlyInCollege.
“This isn’t a trend. It’s more so of an awakening,” she says. “I feel that more black women are waking up and realizing that we do not have to fit anyone’s standards or please anyone besides ourselves.”
“Black women are coming to the realization that everyone is beautiful in their own way,” she added.
The internet on Monday went crazy when a picture of former US First Lady Michelle Obama’s showed her rocking her natural hair in a low puff and gray polka dot headband.

Where the picture was taken is not confirmed but it is understood that the former US President Barack Obama is in the French Polynesian islands.
Most social media users noted that they had been waiting to see her natural hair. The image has been liked 84,000 times and retweeted over 30,000 times since it was shared by a fan.
One fan said: “Seeing Michelle Obama’s natural hair is life changing”.
Other celebrities that have been rocking their natural hair include Lupita Nyong’o who has always managed to pull her beautiful, kinky tresses back into an elegant style.
