Ten candidates have so far submitted their papers in the race to become Tunisia’s next president following the death of Beji Caid Essebsi last month.

The presidential hopefuls submitted their documents on Friday, the first day of application set by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Among the candidates are media mogul Nabil Karoui, Mohamed Abbou of the centrist Democratic Current party and Abir Moussi of the right-wing Free Destourian Party.

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed is also expected to be in the race after his Tahaya Tounes party said on Wednesday that it would nominate him as its candidate.

Presidential hopefuls are expected to submit their candidatures by 9 August.

IEC has set the campaign period to run from 2 to 13 September.

Initially scheduled for November, the Tunisian Presidential election will be held on 15 September.

For a candidate to be declared winner after the first round of voting, they must obtain more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate obtains that figure, a run-off poll will be held no later than 3 November.

If all goes as planned, the North African country will have its second democratically elected president. Essebsi was the first, having served from December 2014.
