Eight Somali nationals have been sentenced to jail terms by an Egyptian court after they were convicted of plotting a failed attack in the capital, Addis Ababa.

The eight, accused of being members of the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab, were sentenced to between two and nine years in by the court.

They were found guilty of planning to attack the Addis Ababa stadium during Ethiopia’s World Cup qualifier match against Nigeria in October 2013.

Prosecutors said a number of explosive devices, weapons, hand grenades and football jerseys were recovered from the house rented by the Somali nationals.

Two Somalis died while trying to make final preparations to construct the bombs for this bombing, the government said at the time.
