Eight people are feared dead after a canoe boat in which they were traveling capsized on Lake Albert, Uganda, local publication Daily Monitor has reported.

According to the report, the Sunday accident occurred as the boat was heading to Sebigoro landing site in Kyangwali Sub County, Kikuube District. It was carrying eighteen passengers.

Nine people survived the accident according to regional police spokesperson Julius Hakiza, who also said that efforts to retrieve bodies were underway. At the time of going to press, only one body of a 10-month-old baby had been retrieved.

The incident is being investigated though preliminary reports show that the most probable cause of the accident was over loading, given the capacity of the boat is 8. The canoe in this case was carrying 18 people.
