Eid al-Adha festival honours ancient rites and rituals in Morocco
Muslims around the world are this week celebrating Eid al-Adha – the Feast of Sacrifice – one of two Eid festivals on the Islam calendar.
As part of the festivities, sheep and goats are slaughtered, and the meat is distributed among the poor.
Residents of the Moroccan city of Sale are however known to take their celebrations one step further.
They hold a street festival during the religious holiday, honouring ancient rites and rituals.
They dress in the hides of recently slaughtered sheep and goats, representing legends from local culture.
Locals call this event Bilmawen. It is aimed at fostering a sense of community in the modern suburb.
The now annual event is supported by local government authorities, and police are deployed to provide security.
