Egypt’s President El-Sisi to be sworn in on June 2

Read < 1 minute

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is scheduled to be officially sworn in for his second four-year term on 2 June before the country’s Parliament.

El-Sisi won the North African nation’s March elections with a landslide victory, garnering over 97 per cent of the votes cast.

The voter turnout was around 41 per cent of the almost 60 million registered voters.

Under the Egyptian constitution, the country’s president must take the oath before a special session of the parliament after winning elections and before his presidential term officially starts, which in El-Sisi’s case begins on June 3.

Egyptian media report that about 1,000 people are expected to attend the event, including ambassadors, party heads, top government officials and Muslim and Christian clerics.

There has however been no information on whether foreign dignitaries will be present.

El-Sisi’s re-election was widely expected, as his only rival in the vote, Mousa Mostafa Mousa, was a little-known figure who had previously supported his re-election.
