Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Tuesday pledged his country’s support for peace efforts in Syria, official MENA news agency reports.

“Egypt will also go on in maintaining the rights of the Syrian people and their interests based on the firm stances of preserving the unity of the Syrian territories,” President el-Sisi is quoted as saying to the visiting United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

The Egyptian leader highlighted the importance of mobilizing the international community to draft a permanent and comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis.

The Western Asian country has been dogged by violence for close to a decade, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions others.

The UN currently ranks the country as the world’s biggest refugee crisis.

President el-Sisi noted that Egypt was ready to intensify its contacts with other players to reach a permanent solution to the Syrian conflict based on common concepts.

Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said the UN envoy asserted the importance of the Egyptian role in the Middle East region as a main pillar of stability in the region.
