Egypt’s Luxor tourism
Egypt is variously said to possess a third of the world’s monuments. Luxor possesses half of Egypt’s monuments, a paradise for tourists and history lovers. Visiting the famous Luxor temple, however, would be disappointing because of how empty and deserted it is. Tourism is a main source of income for Egypt. It has seen a difficult 3 years since the unrest that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak. Overall tourism rates have been fluctuating at between 40 and 60% of the levels last recorded before the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. One of the hardest hit cities is Luxor in upper Egypt. There are around 4,000 hotel rooms in Luxor. Capacity is at an average of 20%. Already 2 out of the seven 5 star hotels have closed down. More could join in.
