Egyptian Teens embrace provocative street fashion in search of fame

Youngsters carrying expensive cameras and trendy clothes in their backpacks — ready to pose for a photo shoot wherever possible – are a common sight in posh Cairo districts these days.

Often dressed provocatively, these teenagers are now challenging taboos in a conservative Muslim society, as they push the boundaries in search of fame.

A change of wardrobe in an upscale Cairo park : these Egyptian teenagers want to look their best for the camera. Their objective: to get as many “likes” as possible on social media and ultimately become celebrities, but their choice of wardrobe is raising concerns.

Undeterred by the disapproval, it’s the success of people like Sonek Diab that keeps them motivated. The 21-year-old Egyptian model has joined a modern global phenomenon, by finding fame through social media. He started off getting photographed in high school – and now has two commercials under his belt.

Mostly hailing from Cairo’s impoverished neighborhoods, more and more of these teens look to the Internet for success. But with their provocative style, they’re challenging taboos in a conservative Muslim society that might not yet be ready to accept them

But, with the Egyptian economy largely in shambles, many youths see the social media route as their only hope for success…as they roam the streets in posh Cairo districts, seeking out expensive cars and luxury villas as props
