An Egyptian has embarked on a 5,000 kilometre bicycle ride aimed at encouraging the country’s football team to go for top honors at the World Cup in Russia.

Adventurer Mohamed Nofal began the Cairo-to-Moscow ride over the weekend, and will transverse through Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.

His initiative was announced at a celebratory event at the Russian Cultural Centre in Cairo on 5 April, where a ribbon was cut to mark the official start of the journey.

Nofal said he planned to cover the distance in 65 days, just a few days before the World Cup begins.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on 14 June, though Egypt will play a day later, opening their campaign against Uruguay at the Ekaterinburg Arena.

Egypt is one of five African countries that will compete at the month-long tournament. The others are, Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal.

The Pharaoh’s are grouped alongside host Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

Nofal’s bicycle journey is coordinated with the Egyptian Embassy in Moscow and coincides with celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Russia.
