An Egyptian woman believed to have been the world’s heaviest has died in the United Arab Emirates.

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty was flown to India from Cairo earlier this year – then weighing over 500 kilograms – for a weight reduction surgery.

She went to undergo bariatric surgery, used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese – i.e. having a body mass index of 40 or above, or 35 plus other obesity-related health conditions.

According to local media, the 37-year-old woman had not left her house for more than 25 years due to her weight.

After her story came to light, an online campaign was launched to help her get the surgery that would enable her shed off most of that weight that caused her difficulty in breathing.

Eman was then later transferred to the UAE capital Abu Dhabi for more specialized treatment after her family fell out with the doctors in India.

Her family claimed the Indian doctor that took charge of her did not do much to improve her condition.

By the time of her death in Abu Dhabi, local media report that Eman had lost more than 300kg.

She is said to have died from complications that arose from other conditions.

A hospital statement released after her death indicated that she had a heart disease and kidney dysfunction.
