Egypt has won the membership of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council and will represent North Africa for the next three years. Elections took place on Thursday during meetings between African foreign ministers in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
Cairo now enjoys membership of the African Union’s PSC and the UN Security Council. “Egypt grabbed 47 votes out of the total 52 member countries, which makes Egypt a member for the next three years,” said an African diplomatic source on the sidelines of the AU’s executive board meetings.
The 26th AU Summit will take place on the course of two days. The PSC suspended Egypt’s participation in its activities, two days following the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi on July 3, 2013.
In a statement then, the PSC said the suspension will prevail “until the restoration of constitutional order.” The suspension was lifted almost a year later in June 2014 “considering the progress made in the formal restoration of constitutional order.”
The decision came about two weeks after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi won a sweeping victory in the presidential elections garnering more than 96 per cent of Egyptian votes.
