The Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD) has sent medical aid to South Sudan to support in its recovering medical sector.
According to the Egyptian ambassador in Juba Ahmed al-Din, the medical aid will support South Sudan’s efforts to provide medical care t its citizens.
“The shipment comes as part of supporting the health sector in the brotherly country,” a Saturday statement from the Egyptian foreign ministry read.
The shipment is the second medical assistance from Egypt to Juba in less than a year. The first cargo was sent in October 2018.
South Sudan has been dogged by a civil war since December 2013, sparked by a feud between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar.
President Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup against his rule, allegations the latter refuted but then went on to mobilize a rebel force to fight the government.
The war has killed tens of thousands and forced millions others to flee their homes.
The situation crippled the country’s medical sector, leaving millions exposed to various health risks.
The Egyptian medical aid is expected to go a long way in ensuring the South Sudanese people have access to medical care.
Ambassador al-Din is also confident the aid will help boost ties between the two nations.
“Sending aid shipments to South Sudan reflects Egypt’s firm belief in the historical bonds and shared destinies of the peoples of both countries,” he said.
