Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has vowed to find the killers of an Italian student, to punish them for the murder.
Giulio Regeni, 28, a Cambridge University researcher, was found in a ditch on the outskirts of Cairo on Feb. 3. His body was bruised and broken.
Regeni is thought to have been tortured by his captors before being killed and his body dumped in a ditch.
“I confirm that we will spare no efforts and continue to work with the Italian authorities to arrest the perpetrators, so that they can be punished according to the law,” al-Sisi told Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper.
He called the incident “terrifying and unacceptable” and vowed to intensify cooperation with Italian investigators.
Rome prosecutors suspect that the Italian was murdered by Egyptian security servives who though he was a spy.
Regeni had been studying Egypt’s independent labour unions and had written critical articles about the government.
Egypt has however denied any involvement in his murder, suggesting common criminals or Islamist militants were involved.
