Egypt plunge down FIFA rankings following disastrous World Cup

Following a disastrous FIFA World Cup campaign, Egypt has become Africa’s biggest loser in the latest FIFA rankings published on Thursday.

The North African giants finished without a single point in Russia after losing all their matches, exiting as the worst performer in Group A, from which the host nation and Uruguay qualified for the Round of 16.

The latest rankings show the Pharaohs deteriorated by 20 places, sliding down to position 65.

Fellow World Cup participants Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria have also slid down the rankings, losing five places, three places and one place respectively.

The biggest gainer from the latest rankings is Senegal, which was bundled out of the World Cup on the fair play rule after finishing same on points with Japan. The Teranga Lions climbed up three places to position 24, where they join Tunisia as Africa’s best ranked sides.

Globally, France stormed into top position after their triumph in Russia, where they beat Croatia to lift their second ever FIFA World Cup trophy.

The silver medalists are the second best performers in the rankings, having climbed up 16 places to fourth. The best performer is Russia, which went into the World Cup as the second worst team, but reached the quarter final stage. Russia climbed up 21 places to position 49.
