Egypt: Journalist accused of joining January 25 Youth Movement released

Egypt’s State Security Supreme Prosecution has released journalist Mahmoud al-Saqqa, who was accused of joining a banned group called January 25 Youth Movement.

The journalist, who was released on Saturday, had been detained pending investigation since January 2.

He claims he was tortured and forced to confess to crimes he did not commit.

A number of activists have been charged in connection with the group. Prosecutors allege they formed the group with a view to suspending the Constitution and state institutions, disturbing public peace and effecting a coup.
