Egypt football giants Zamalek quit league over refereeing fallout

Read < 1 minute

Cairo giants Zamalek announced they would withdraw from the Egyptian league in protest at the refereeing of their 3-2 defeat to Tala’ea El-Gaish on Sunday. The club announced on its website that it objected to the referee’s “wrong” decisions to send off defender Ali Gabr, and award Tala’ea a penalty. The statement further says the club had objected against the choice of the referee, Mahmoud al-Banna, and prior to the match. The Egypt Football Association says it is yet to receive any official communication from Zamalek and has defended the standard of officiating in the league. Under the league’s regulations Zamalek risk being relegated to the fourth tier of Egyptian league if they do not reverse their decision to withdraw
