Egypt executes 15 militants convicted of 2013 attack
Egypt on Tuesday executed 15 jihadist militants convicted of carrying out a deadly attack on an army outpost in the Sinai Peninsula in 2013.
The executions are reported to have been carried out simultaneously in two prisons located north of the capital Cairo.
Tuesday’s executions are the largest of such kind done by the North African country since six convicted jihadists were hanged in 2015.
All the 15 were executed by hanging.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi earlier this month ordered the country’s military to step up efforts to crush militancy, and that they should use maximum force against the jihadists.
His call came following an attack that killed more than 300 people in a Sinai mosque in November.
Sinai has in recent years been beset by an insurgency, with jihadist groups including so-called Islamic State (IS) attacking targets including army, police and judges.
Last week, IS blew up a grounded helicopter with an anti-tank missile at a North Sinai airport, killing an army officer and wounding two others.
