So far, over 3,000 cases of the Ebola virus have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the health officials, the virus has killed over 2,000 people in the country since August 2018 while 341 suspected cases are under investigation.

A count done by the Multi-sectoral Committee for the Response of the Epidemic (CMRE) shows that in the current epidemic, there have been 3,373 cases of infections in which 2,231 deaths were recorded.

North Kivu and Ituri provinces in the east of DRC are the most affected by the haemorrhagic fever.

Ebola centers in these regions have been targets of attacks and a number of their staff have been killed or injured in armed attacks.

This has led to control efforts being regularly disrupted due to the insecurity caused by the many militias present in the area.

The current Ebola outbreak is the tenth in the country since 1976 and the second most fatal in history after the outbreak in West Africa which killed 11,000 people in 2014.
