The East African Community (EAC) member states are spearheading a proposal to ban the importation of cars from outside countries reports the Daily Monitor

According to the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, EAC is in the final stages of ensuring that cars will no longer be imported into the region, rather their spare parts will be assembled in the region to create employment for East Africans.

“We have discussed with East African members and we are about to agree. We need to stop the importation of cars from outside. We want them to bring the parts here and assemble them here so that our people at least get the job of joining them together,” Mr Museveni said yesterday at the 5th annual young leaders’ forum held at the International University of East Africa

Museveni further added that African countires need to work together to strengthen their negotiation with the world market. By Africa increasing its bargaining power on the international scene, it will expand the market for Africa’s goods and services.
