East Africa Community leaders reconvene summit on Burundi
East African Community (EAC) leaders reconvene in Tanzania Sunday what officials described as an “emergency” meeting to brainstorm on restoring stability in the volatile Burundi as resistance against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third term spreads outside the capital, Bujumbura.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, is among the leaders that have been invited to attend the Emergency Summit on Burundi.
Others include South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma and Angolan leader Eduardo dos Santos, who is the current chair of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICLGR).
The Secretary General of the United Nations will be represented by his envoy to the Great Lakes region.
This meeting will be preceded by a gathering of regional ministers and security officials on Saturday May 30.
During their last meeting on May 13 in Tanzania, EAC leaders condemned the coup in Burundi and called for the return to constitutional order.
