The effects of the tropical storm that carved a path of destruction through Durban and Amanzimtoti is still being felt. Several deaths have been reported and mopping up operations have been underway since then.

Late on Thursday the KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu declared the province a disaster area.

Five hospitals in the area were badly effected and the city’s harbour only opened for business by mid-morning on Thursday. This, after a coastal container vessel ran aground near the harbour entrance. The storm took many people by surprise. Some were luckier than others.

Others are worried about when the authorities will arrive to repair the damage.

While Life has returned to some semblance of normality for many residents in the area, people are sparing a thought for those who lost friends and loved ones during and after the storm.
