The 22 January 2016 deadline set by regional mediators for the formation of South Sudan transitional government national unity has elapsed following disagreements on the peace implementation process between the two warring factions.
However, both the government and opposition say there is no return to war but the process of review of the constitution will take at least one more month. Meanwhile, IGAD and it’s joint monitoring and evaluation committee, under former leader of Botswana Festus Mogae, are reportedly eyeing the upcoming African Union Heads of State assembly to pass decisions, which should assit the aborted political process in South Sudan.
There is already a high level of frustration among mediators and monitors of the situation in South Sudan.
