Dialogue led by Uganda President to end Burundi crisis set to resume
Uganda’s defence minister Crispus Kiyonga, who was appointed to spearhead reconciliation efforts in Burundi has announced that dialogue to end the on going crisis in Burundi is resume on December 28th. The talks, led by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, were suspended by the Burundi government in July. The violence in Burundi began in April when President Pierre Nkurunziza launched a bid for a third term in power, leading to protests and a crackdown by security forces.
“To put a dialogue together means there are people willing to come together..so consensus had not evolved..there were other people stilling thinking that the dmialogue was not necessary because elections had taken place..others were saying no..we have been locked out..so what we have described as wide range of consultations have taken this long because the consensus had not evolved that we should go to the negotiating table.” Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, Uganda Defense Minister
